I accidentally shot the Old North Bridge in black and white. In doing so, I was amazed to see things I had never seen before. Surprisingly, black and white seems to bring small details into focus. I have been over, around and under the bridge but had never noticed the rocks or the extent of the fortification. I believe the extra wooden girders must be there to protect against ice, debris and wayward canoers flowing downstream because they aren't on the other side.

Nice accident in monochrome..good shot.. funny how mono exposes different aspects of things..
I think you're dead on that the fortifications on the upstream side are to protect the pilings.... especially given the V shape... sort of like cow catchers...
Your comments re: B&W are right on...it's good, I think, to go monochrome once in awhile...this is a beautiful shot of the bridge!
Lovely shot. I think removing colour can really help 'de-clutter' an image and help us see other details...as you showed!
Very astute of you to notice how you notice different things in B&W. I'm going to have to try that. Lovely angle on the bridge, nice curve.
I'm never game to shoot in black and white, perhaps you shall inspire me.
Now where is that bridge I saw recently???

I very much like this shot. I agree that a photo in B&W can be revealing. ;-)
