It's a good thing there wasn't a government shutdown in 1775, closing the Old North Bridge,  or else there would not have been a 'shot heard around the world' and the Revolutionary War may not have begun.   It's time we heard another shot and begin a new Revolutionary War.   Those Patriots  must be rolling over in their graves.

What was even more interesting than what covered the workbenches of the Yankee Craftsman was what covered the ceilings and the walls.   While most of the taxidermy was real, the rhino bust was not. 

Yankee Craftsman

In my quest to repair my lighting fixtures, I happened across the Yankee Craftsman in nearby Wayland.  It was as though I had stepped back in time when I walked through the door into their workshop.  It was so refreshing to step out of our "throw-away/disposable" world back to an era where craftsmanship was and still is appreciated.  I was mesmerized.  Gary, who has been working in his family business since he was six,  took the time to show me how to do my own rewiring.  I didn't have the time to walk into their barn that houses many unique lighting fixtures.  I hope to do that on my next visit when I pick up the parts for my lanterns.

Theme Day: It's All in the "Detail"ing

We recently had the exterior of our house painted and the painter recommended that I get rid of my light fixtures as they were all rusted, falling apart, missing pieces and splattered with old paint.  I agreed and went on the hunt for new fixtures, only to find how incredibly expensive they were.   So, I decided I would just paint them with a new metallic paint.  When I started working on them, I found that there was no rust, just pure metal  With a splash of vinegar and a lot of elbow grease, and a few replacement parts, I discovered that I was the owner of amazing handmade copper fixtures, with a retail value of over $2,000.  To think I almost threw them out.  The term "detailing" in the U.S. refers to the act or process of meticulously cleaning and refurbishing an automobile.  I would like to think it can also be applied to light fixtures.

Harvesting Water Chestnuts

Some water chestnuts are edible.  These are not.  They are an invasive species that creates a dense mass on the surface of the water, blocking out the sun to native aquatic vegetation and reducing oxygen levels for fish.  A very messy job, but someone has to do it.

Karma Coffee

Count yourself lucky if you drive through Sudbury and smell the aroma of coffee in the air. It means that Dave is busy roasting up a batch of beans from Ethopia, Mali, Yemen or Kenya at Karma Coffee on Route 20. Stop by, put your feet up and enjoy a cup with a good friend.

Winter Storm Nemo

The street was abuzz this weekend as snow blowers made short work of the 24" of snow that Winter Storm Nemo left in its wake.

I'm assuming these guys are fishing but I did not see poles or holes.  They have a great little fire to keep them warm, a radio, a frying pan and some ketchup and mustard.  They are all set to enjoy the afternoon on Heard Pond.
