Harvesting Water Chestnuts

P1000749

Some water chestnuts are edible.  These are not.  They are an invasive species that creates a dense mass on the surface of the water, blocking out the sun to native aquatic vegetation and reducing oxygen levels for fish.  A very messy job, but someone has to do it.

They all seem to be smiling. And I guess it is a day out on the water :)

I've pulled invasive plants (mostly ivy and ice plant) at Bolsa Chica Reserve. Doing this on the water seems so much more fun. Such good people shots.
So great to hear from you - it made my day. I left more info on the costumes in a comment. I remember having the shoes/socks you mention as a kid.
